  Pack Nite in Review 5/17/2010

Last Pack/Den/Parents Meeting for 2009-2010 session

How many animals can you be?  Well we all saw our Cub Master become about 30 different types of animals, from the king of the jungle to the “Every Which Way but Loose” orangutan.  The boys got to come up with an animal and Steve had to become it and everyone had to guess what it was.  Lots of fun, almost like going to the zoo.

A uniform inspection was conducted and the boys learned what a well dressed Scout should be wearing.

    • A clean & pressed official BSA shirt.  All appropriate badges should be in place.
    • Clean pants and shoes (no holes).
    • Clean hands & hair (personal hygiene).
    • Anyone that may need assistance with any of these, please contact one of the Pack Leaders or Committee members.

Dens:

Tigers – received compass belt loops.  Were awarded with small play balls because they were always on the ‘ball’ this year.

Bears – patches and pins were awarded.  The Bears showed ‘stick-to-a-tive-ness’ (Steve’s words) this year and therefore were rewarded with glue sticks.

Webelos – Alex received his Handyman pin.  All received their Artist pins.  Webelos helped our Pack to grow this year and received Snap Dragon seeds as a thank you.

Any activities done over the summer will count toward Scout patches.  Please keep in touch with your son’s leader via the web page, email, phone, etc.

The last raffle of the year was conducted and the boys had to pick a number from 1 – 21.  The prize, a Lego set.  One of the Webelos was the happy recipient.

Upcoming Events:

  • May 30th – Memorial Day Parade, sponsored by the VFW.  Those walking in the parade should meet at the VFW before 2pm, in Class A dress uniform.
  • Catfish Days – the Grand Marshall this year will be BSA with a representative from each of our local troops & packs to ride in the car.  What an honor.
  • Summer Camp in June.

Pack Nite in Review 5/3/2010

Cub Master Steve asked the Scouts to provide words that describe scouting.  They came up with many great words.  Some of the words that described scouting were: fun, helpful, camping, creativity, loyalty, meetings (gatherings, Pack or Den meetings), activities, uniforms, awards, recognition, community service, respect for country, respect for self, respect for others, Akela (any adult), friends, pride, responsibility, discipline, honor, duty, work, concentration.

The Scouts played a word game.  Everyone was given a letter and had to join with others in order to form 3 letter words.  Carlos, Leader Bob, and Max had 13 words.

All the Dens participated in a Den yell, to see who was the loudest.  Gee guess who won?  The Webelos were the loudest.

3 separate raffles were held tonight, one for each Den.  Webelos Will won a word-burning kit.  Bear Edick won the video microphone and Tiger Tyler took off with the Transformer figure.

Dens:

Tigers – reported on what our flag stands for and what it meant to them.  Mrs. Rose did a nice job creating the rhyme that was recited.

Webelos – showed their art sculptures made with clay and their bird houses made from 2-liter bottles.  Mrs. Day conducted this art class for the boys, which was part of their Arrow of Light requirements.

Upcoming Events:

  • Tonight was the last Pack meeting for this school year.
  • 5/10/10  Next Monday, will be our last Den meeting.
  • 5/17/10 Last leader meeting.

Pack Nite in Review 3/1/2010

Cub Master, Steve Olsen dedicated tonight’s meeting to Mrs. Lori Webb.  He read a prayer and had the boys participate by reciting confirmation passages from the Cub Scout oath and motto.  Tyler Webb was presented with a certificate of dedication and achievement for doing his best and calling 911 and his dad when Lori became ill.  Steve presented Kale with a donation that was collected from our pack families, which overwhelmed him as he spoke a note of thanks to everyone.

Dens:

Tigers – have started work on their ‘Leave No Trace’ advancement.

Bears – built model cars last week without glue.  Now that’s a challenge.

Webelos – Have been working on achieving their Webelos badge and communications.  The Boy Scouts have invited the Webelos to go on an overnight caving trip to southern Illinois in the near future.  Parents must attend with their Scout on this outing.  Bob Nieses will provide details as they are made available.

New Scouts – Max Narine, will be introduced at our next meeting.

Monthly Theme – Spring & New Beginnings

The boys participated in a game of ‘Juggle the Bear’, which is similar to ‘Hot Potato’.  Coarse if we had used a real potato, probably would’ve ended up as mashed potatoes.  The winner was Tristan Ekberg.  At-a-boy!!  Next time maybe we can play dodge ball.

Pack Raffle – Air Hockey game was one by Royce M.

Trisha DeChristaphono was introduced as our Pack Advancement Chair.  If anyone has any questions about badges that their son(s) has worked towards, they can contact Trisha.  Second Hand Rose, a local thrift store has volunteered to sew badges on shirts for the boys at a $1 per patch.  Coarse, the Scout can learn to do this their-selves.

Gina Stachowiak was introduced as our Pack Public Relations Chair, our Blue & Gold Chair and is the Web-Master for our Pack web page.

Steve gave an interview in last week’s Free Press about the 100 years of Scouting.  Quotable note about Scouts; “It’s not nerdy.”

Upcoming Events:

-   Tiger Hike on 3/13/10 – 10am – Forsythe Woods.  Even if you’re not a Tiger you can still come for a great time.

-   3/21/10 – Blue & Gold Banquet at St. Rose Church, 5:00pm.

-   3/27/10 – Monthly Service Project – Clean up day at  Rivals lookout Park, previously known as Rivals Club.  Located at the end of Rivals road, off 102 in Wesley Township10amNoon, approximately.

-   April is our Space Derby.  What planet are you from?

-   April is early registration for day camp at Rainbow Council for this Summer.  It’s full of fun times and great learning activities for the boys.  Details will be provided next month.  This year it will be at Forsythe Woods, called Twilight camp (2:30-8:30pm).

Scout To Do:

-    Any boy, who has not turned in their ‘Scout Profile’ sheet, needs to get these in to Gina by next week.

Happy Birthday to Steve Olsen and Brandon Nieses.  Hey who forgot the cupcakes?

Pack Nite in Review 2/1/2010
*The pack had a hands on lesson about hypothermia, Cub Master and Assistant Den leader Kyle explained the dangers of the cold weather, and how you can get frost bite in a matter of minutes. The pack were geared up to put their arms in ice water to grab money off the bottom of the tank.
They were quite surprised when they couldn't grab the coins. So a few boys just used their other hand.
All leaders and scouts volunteered to participate. Edik on the other hand passed, he couldn't understand why anyone would do that knowing it would hurt. Hmmm

*The parents had a lot of laughs helping the scouts out with a rhyming game.

*The big raffle winner of a waterproof black box from the Joliet Arsenal was tiger cub Karlis, he intends on using his new box for toys.

Pack Nite in Review 1/4/2010
*Cub Master Steve Olsen presented Rev. Moon with a certificate of Thanks.
Rev. Moon also accepted a Charter certificate on behalf of the Wilmington Masonic Lodge #208

*The scouts and leaders were surprised to have a uniform inspection, not everyone has a uniform as yet, but was told to still dress appropriate. Jeans, No sweat pants. Shirt tucked in.

*Leaders had as much fun as the scouts playing games.

*Five Bears were playing catch up and received there bobcat patch.

 Pack Nite in Review 12/7/09

*  Cub Master says was a great game for the boys.  They had fun and even caught our Cub Master mis-stating some instructions, or was that Simon that made the mistake?

*  Didn't see any pirates, but the boys did walk the plank.  I think more fell off from laughter than unbalance-ness.

*  Were you able to describe the difference between a Den and a Pack?  A den is a small group of individuals, that when put together form a Pack.

*  Uniforms, shirts, bandanas, books etc.  can be obtained from Rainbow Council (on Pine Bluff/Lorenzo Rd), The Chalkboard (Rt 30 in Crest Hill) or online using one of our links from the link page.

*  Not sure where to put those patches, pins, and other awards you boy is getting?  See Vickie Weese at the meetings for a description sheet, contact Rainbow Council on-line, or in the back of the Scout book.
